How to shortlist a wedding venue in the UK

18 July 2026

Wedding venue shortlisting goes wrong when couples start with Instagram and reverse-engineer the guest list later. On The Ideal Wedding Day, flip that: agree the day you want to host, then find the space that can hold it.

Write the brief before you browse

  • Ceremony and reception in one place, or two?
  • Hard guest-list number (and the soft “maybe” list)
  • Season and weather tolerance for outdoor moments
  • How far the furthest guest can reasonably travel
  • Whether you need bedrooms on site for family

Those five answers eliminate whole venue types quickly — barns without wet-weather plans, city hotels with tiny ceremony rooms, castles that cannot sleep your parents.

Visit with the same questions

Ask every venue about ceremony licences, noise curfews, catering exclusivity, and what happens if it rains. Vague answers are a signal to keep looking.

Compare three venues against one brief. The right shortlist feels calmer, not louder.
